Saverne

An area full of surprises

Saverne has preserved the traces of its historic role and past life: remains of the Roman wall, medieval wall, Romanesque church, cloister, remarkable houses, etc. The town stands in an exceptional natural site, at the foot of the wooded mountains, crowned by châteaux-forts that surround it, like so many sentinels.

The Château des Rohan, once nicknamed "The Little Alsatian Versailles", is located in Saverne town centre, along the Canal de la Marne au Rhin. Built in the 13th century and restored in the 19th century on the initiative of Napoleon III, this former castle now houses a museum, a cultural centre, a youth hostel and a school. Its pink sandstone facade spans a length of 140 metres, the horizontal equivalent of the height of the Cathédrale de Strasbourg. Admire the perspective of the château from the park and enjoy a breathtaking view of the Port de Plaisance!

Discover the Roseraie de Saverne, the second oldest rose garden in France with 800 varieties of roses! Internationally renowned, the Roseraie confirms Saverne as the "City of Roses". Situated at the foot of the Saverne Pass, this 1.5 hectare garden boasts a collection of around 8,500 rose bushes.

Le château du Haut-Barr, nicknamed “L’Oeil de l’Alsace”, is located é à 5 minutes by car or 1 h 30 à on foot from the town centre. Built on three rocks, it stands 470 metres above sea level and occupies a strategic position between the Lorraine plateau and the Plaine d’Alsace. Take advantage of the superb views and try to catch a glimpse of the Cathédrale de Strasbourg!!
