Alsace has a high density of châteaux forts in its territory, with around a hundred sites that can be visited.
The foothills of the Vosges have been the site of numerous fortified castles, which have gradually been abandoned. The magnificent ruins, full of mystery, are now open to hikers on the Chemin des Châteaux Forts d'Alsace. Its route stretches for around 450 kilometres from the north to the south of the region, passing more than 80 castles from Wissembourg à Thann in the Haut-Rhin. The Chemin des Châteaux Forts runs parallel to the plaine d'Alsace, the crête des Vosges and the Route des Vins d'Alsace.
