The village of Wangenbourg-Engenthal, in the Vosges mountains, is one of the oldest listed tourist resorts in Alsace, dating back to 1929. Greatly appreciated for its climate, Wangenbourg-Engenthal offers a mountain micro-climate: protected from the westerly winds, many people come here to get some fresh air and admire the wonderful scenery. Its scattered settlements in the valleys and small plateaux create a bucolic, alpine landscape that once earned it the nickname of the "Little Switzerland of Alsace". The setting is also ideal for nature activities. The village lies at the crossroads of four of the Transvosgian long-distance footpaths (GR) (GR 53, GR 531, GR 532 and GR 534), as well as the TMV (Traversée du Massif Vosgien à VTT).
At the same time, it's an ideal base from which to explore Alsace's tourist attractions, from the great classics (Saverne, Marmoutier, the Wine Route, Obernai, Mont Ste-Odile, ....) to the more secret corners of the region. It also takes in the highlights of nearby Lorraine (Dabo, Phalsbourg, Sainte-Croix animal park).
OUR HISTORY .....
The gîte is located on the ground floor of an old farmhouse dating from the 1850s, which was completely restored between 2021 and 2023.
The roof frame has been replaced, the floors ripped out, the floor/ceiling structural beams reinforced, the doors raised, the interior walls stripped of their thick layer of plaster to reveal beautiful Vosges sandstone.
We salvaged all the old boards, which were brushed and put back on the walls for decoration.
Most of the materials were recycled.
The furniture, decorative objects and crockery were all found and restored by us.
We acted as architect, project manager and project owner, as well as demolisher, bricklayer, carpenter, floor layer, painter and decorator ......
It was a wonderful project that we'll be delighted to share with our guests.
Sylvie and Eddie
